Our history

IMPRESA was born with Expresso, grew with SIC, and is now a media universe. Every day, it produces 8 channels (SIC, SIC Internacional, SIC Notícias, SIC Radical, SIC Mulher, SIC K, SIC Caras, and SIC Novelas) and the country’s leading newspaper, Expresso.

In 2024, more than 3.6 million viewers in Portugal connected daily with SIC. Among Portuguese channel groups, SIC’s thematic channels were the most watched in 2024. Every day, nearly 2.5 million viewers tuned into SIC Notícias, SIC Radical, SIC Mulher, SIC Caras, SIC K, and SIC Novelas.

From January to December 2024 (APCT data), Expresso was the best-selling publication in Portugal, with an average of 83,985 copies, maintaining its position as the top-selling newspaper in the country since 2017.

IMPRESA is the Portuguese media company with the highest number of television channels broadcasting internationally: 6 channels.

SIC Internacional reaches 10 million viewers worldwide via cable, satellite, and IPTV systems. The channel is distributed in France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Andorra, Germany, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Mozambique, and Cape Verde.

SIC Notícias is available in France, Andorra, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the USA, Canada, Mozambique, and Cape Verde. SIC Mulher, SIC Radical, and SIC K are watched in Angola and Mozambique. In Cape Verde, SIC Mulher, SIC Radical, SIC K, and SIC CARAS are available.

In total, SIC channels reach 11 countries through 40 operators.

Through OPTO, SIC’s streaming platform, viewers can watch SIC live from anywhere in the world. SIC Notícias is also part of OPTO’s international offering. All that’s needed is the app on an internet-connected device or access to opto.sic.pt.

Additionally, the 24-hour digital channels OPTO SIC, SIC Alta Definição, and SIC Replay are available worldwide.

1972
Francisco Pinto Balsemão creates Sojornal, the seed of what would become the IMPRESA Group.

1973
On January 6, the Expresso newspaper is founded, quickly becoming a reference in Portuguese society.

1975
VASP is founded to distribute Expresso.

1984
On November 6, Blitz newspaper is launched, dedicated to the music universe.

1987
The Pessoa Prize is launched by Expresso to recognize Portuguese creativity with significant impact on the country’s cultural and scientific life.

1989
A joint venture with Brazilian group Abril leads to the launch of Portugal’s first business magazine – Exame – marking IMPRESA’s entry into the magazine sector.

1992
On July 18, Expresso begins distribution in a plastic bag to facilitate transport.
On October 6, SIC begins broadcasting as Portugal’s first private television channel, occupying position 3 on the channel grid.

1997
SIC Internacional begins broadcasting on September 17, aiming to reach the global Portuguese community.
On October 4, Expresso launches its website, Expresso.pt.

2000
On June 6, IMPRESA is listed on the Lisbon Stock Exchange, becoming the first media group publicly traded in Portugal.
GESCO is founded to manage archives and documentation centers.

2001
On January 8, SIC Notícias is launched, the first 24-hour live news channel in Portuguese.
On April 23, SIC Radical is launched.
On May 23, SIC’s first website goes online: www.sic.pt, combining information and entertainment.

2003
On March 8, SIC Mulher is launched on International Women’s Day.
On March 15, Expresso moves from its original location on Rua Duque de Palmela to the current IMPRESA building.
Boa Cama Boa Mesa brand is created, publishing an annual guide focused on restaurants, hotels, and leisure experiences.
On October 6, SIC Esperança is founded, a public utility private social solidarity institution across all IMPRESA companies.
Olhares photography site is launched, becoming the largest Portuguese-language photography portal in the world.

2006
On June 20, Blitz transitions to magazine format.
GMTS is created to provide technical television services.

2007
IMPRESA adds InfoPortugal to its portfolio, a tech company specializing in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and tourism/leisure solutions.

2009
SIC begins internationalizing its thematic channels.
On December 18, SIC K is launched.

2011
On November 21, SIC’s soap opera Laços de Sangue wins an International Emmy in the Telenovela category.

2012
On July 23, IMPRESA announces a new management model: Francisco Pinto Balsemão becomes chairman, and Pedro Norton is appointed CEO.

2013
On December 6, SIC launches its fifth thematic channel: SIC Caras.

2014
On May 6, Expresso launches Expresso Diário, an online daily newspaper.
On November 17, SIC creates DSTV Kids, a channel dedicated to Portuguese-speaking African children and families.

2015
In January, Expresso launches Expresso Curto, a daily newsletter.

2016
On March 6, Francisco Pedro Balsemão becomes CEO of IMPRESA.
On April 20, SIC’s soap operas Coração d’Ouro and Mar Salgado win gold and bronze medals respectively at the New York Festival’s World’s Best TV & Films℠ awards in Las Vegas – the first time Portuguese soap operas were finalists.
On August 12, Tribuna, a sports site under Expresso’s identity, is launched.

2017
On March 6, SIC strengthens international content sales by launching the Content Distribution website.

2018
In January, Blitz ceases print publication and becomes a digital platform within Expresso.
IMPRESA sells its magazine portfolio – including Activa, Caras, Caras Decoração, Courrier Internacional, Exame, Exame Informática, Jornal de Letras, Telenovelas, TV Mais, Visão, Visão História, and Visão Júnior – to Trust in News.
On November 17, DSTV Kids is rebranded as Txillo.

2019
On January 5, Expresso begins distribution in paper bags.
On January 28, IMPRESA expands its portfolio with Volante SIC, a comprehensive automotive news brand.
On February 6, all IMPRESA brands and employees are centralized in one location: the IMPRESA Building in Paço de Arcos.

2020
On July 7, Atelier IMPRESA is launched to provide tailored communication strategies based on creative content.
On November 24, OPTO is launched – a new way to watch SIC. Always pioneering, IMPRESA diversifies its brand portfolio with a paid streaming platform offering exclusive content.
On December 18, SIC launches ADVNCE, a multi-format brand aimed at amplifying Portugal’s E-Sports and Gaming community.

2023

On January 6, Expresso celebrates its 50th anniversary and is honored by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, as an Honorary Member of the Order of Liberty.

On October 9, SIC Notícias unveils a new visual identity, a new website, and a mobile app.

On December 6, SIC Caras celebrates its 10th anniversary.

2024

On April 10, the group launches its new talent agency, Óbvio.

On October 1, SIC Novelas is born.

On November 6, Blitz celebrates 40 years.
